Fundamentals of Lighting (FOL)


Our annual Fundamentals of Lighting course is back! This ten-module course provides participants with an introduction to the fundamentals of illumination. It gives a comprehensive overview of basic lighting principles, lamp and luminaire types, lighting calculations, and controls, as well as functional and aesthetic applications best practices. This course is ideal for architects, engineers, designers, contractors, sales reps, customer service reps, manufacturers, distributors, and students. A description of each module is below:

Module 4: Luminaires

Module 5: Controls

Module 6: Photometry & Calculations

Module 7: Codes, Standards & Economics

Module 8: Lighting Design Process, Sustainability, Commissioning

Module 9: Lighting for Interiors

Module 10: Lighting for Exteriors

FOL 2022 will be a hybrid format with both in-person and online sessions. Tuesday and Thursday sessions will be taught virtually and the final Saturday session will be taught in-person for hands-on learning. Attendance with audio and video is required for online sessions. A recurring Zoom link will be sent out to registrants before the first session. The in-person session will be taught in Denver with the final location to be determined.

Pre-registration is required and registration fees must be paid in advance. Your registration fee includes all course materials, which are electronic and will be emailed to you prior to the start of the course.

Note - The IES FUNDAMENTALS OF LIGHTING ED-100 course is pass/fail. Students must attend a minimum of 80% of classes, participate in weekly quizzes and score 70% or better on a 40-question Final Exam.
